Fitna the Movie: Geert Wilder’s Film about the Quran

This morning my email contained a link to the Dutch film Fitna about Quran. Normally, I leave things like that until mid-day when I am fully into the day. Wish I had not opened the link. The imagery is terrible for two reasons: first, the visual of death and destruction; second, the idea that a religion which preaches such, can consume people to act so violently. While watching the film (15 minutes) I thought of Jeremiah Wright and how he was only one step from the line into the same call for violence.
As I have said before, religion carries an emotion that no intellectual cause can match. The desire to return to the Federalist principles is an intellectual yearning. The spiritual connection makes religion the ideal tool for terrorism.
Today is not the day to discuss the future. I am shaken by the imagery of the film, the content is brutal. The messages delivered by the film are not startling. Others have presented it before. But, today I am shaken.
My topic for today was to be on the Federalist papers. That seems so trival after veiwing the film. What I plan is a period to reflect on what I have seen because the memories of 9/11 have returned. Seeing the plane crash into the second tower and knowing my son was at work in a high rise in NYC, is hard to describe. Would his building be another target? Was he safe? Would there be more attacks? How was he coping on the twenty second floor? Would I be able to reach him?
The phone lines were jammed, the internet was overloaded, no email came back. Finally, he was able to call me. Those on the other side of his building, watched the second plane go into the second tower. He knew people meeting in the trade center, (who left minutes before). While he had not seen it, he like me was uncertain as to his future.
God Bless America, you and your family.
