Who is Number One? Does it Matter?

College Football National Championship

How much do we really know based on the polls?

Are Florida and Alabama really the two best teams in football? Are Cincinnati and TCU contenders for the national title? Here are the BCS top rankings:

Florida

Alabama

Texas

TCU

Cincinnati

Boise State

All teams are undefeated today. Some have a game yet to play. The major contests will be

Alabama vs Florida SEC conference championship

Texas vs Nebraska Big 12 conference championship

Should Alabama beat Florida and Texas lose. We could see a replay of the Alabama v Florida game. One might ask how could a team beaten be playing in the championship when other teams are undefeated? Very good question, until you consider the teams undefeated play much lower caliber competition. So why are TCU and Cincinnati ranked so high? Why is the SEC consistently ranked as the top conference?

Can we just drop the national championship concept until we have a playoff system. Which I do not see a need for in football. Basketball has always had tournaments, football never. Can we go back to the good ole days of the Southwest champ playing a visitor in the Cotton Bowl? How about the West Coast champ hosting the Midwest champ from the Big 10 in the Rose Bowl. Many classic games were as a result of the old “bowl” system. Not until the media decided to create a national championship did things become muddled.

Florida may be the best team in college football today. Texas might have an argument if they beat NU. But does it matter? College athletes should be students first, athletes second. Winning a national championship should be a bonus to attending college, not the goal. In the grand scheme of things are we so shallow as a culture to need national championships? Does the quality of our life improve or deteriorate based on the winning or losing of a local team? Are we more than a jersey in the crowd either in person or at home?
